More extreme capability for next-level adventures
Over the past quarter-century, the Subaru Outback has carved out a niche as a uniquely adventurous utility vehicle with the genuine go-anywhere capability that only comes from standard Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD, X-MODE® and generous ground clearance. Now, with the all-new 2020 Subaru Outback, these qualities are taken to bold new heights. Completely reengineered from top to bottom, the new Outback is now built on the Subaru Global Platform, features the choice of two all-new SUBARU BOXER® engines and has even more advanced safety systems. The new exterior design matches the rugged character of the Outback, while the new interior brings unexpected levels of comfort and refinement. The passenger cabin also delivers more space for everyone, as well as increased versatility for carrying more adventurous gear. To top it all off, the standard roof rails with crossbars make it easy to bring bulkier items along for the ride. The 2020 Subaru Outback had a big reputation to live up to—now, it’s equipped for even bigger challenges.

The all-new 2020 Subaru Outback sports a new exterior design that is both bold and purposeful. The rugged qualities of this authentic adventurer shine through in the aggressive front fascia, cutting-edge front LED headlights and sweeping rear LED taillights.
The overall stance of the vehicle is wider and more planted, while improved aerodynamics help to improve efficiency and stability. The high ground clearance and generous glass area complete the picture, emphasizing that the Outback features a commanding a view of the road—any road.
Generous Ground Clearance
The authentic go-anywhere capability of the all-new Outback is further enhanced by 220 mm of ground clearance, more than enough to clear the average obstacle. This feature also comes in handy when driving through deep snow, in ruts or over pothole-strewn surfaces.
Triggered by a button on the key fob, the power tailgate features an auto-close function and a stop-position memory function to set the opening height. An integrated safety sensor prompts the tailgate to reverse direction if an object is detected in its path. On the Touring trim level and up, the new hands-free sensor, located near the Subaru badge on the tailgate, allows you to access the cargo area even if your hands are full.
Power-adjustable Heated Side Mirrors
The starting point for the completely redesigned interior of the all-new Outback begins under the skin with the Subaru Global Platform. More robust than ever, this new platform sets the stage for a quieter cabin with more space for passengers and their gear.
The cabin itself features a cleaner, more streamlined design with added sound-deadening measures, more high-end touches, interior refinements and the latest technology. The result: an adventure-ready utility with acres of desirability.
The seats on the all-new Outback are completely reengineered to provide increased support and more comfort over the long haul. The standard driver’s seat is 10-way power-adjustable and includes power lumbar support. The Limited and Premier trim levels gain a cushion seat length adjustment and two-position memory function for the driver, as well as an 8-way power-adjustable seat for the front passenger. For rear-seat passengers, heated outboard seats are available on the Limited trim level and higher. Front-seat passengers benefit from standard heated seats and, exclusive to the Premier trim level, heated and ventilated seats.
Greater Cargo Space
In using the Subaru Global Platform, the all-new Outback gained countess benefits, including increased cargo capacity. All trim levels come standard with 60/40-split flat-folding rear seats; when folded down, the cargo volume soars from 920 litres to 2,144 litres. The cargo area itself is flatter than before for increased versatility when loading a wide variety of items. On the Touring, Limited and Premier trim levels, the new hands-free power tailgate feature allows for even easier access.
Advanced Climate Control
The all-new Outback now features automatic climate control on the Convenience trim level, ensuring a higher degree of comfort and convenience for all passengers. On the Touring trim level and above, the focus turns to an automatic dual-zone climate control system with humidity sensor incorporated. On the Limited and Premier trim levels, rear-seat passengers have their own climate control vents.

With its low centre of gravity, the SUBARU BOXER® engine helps to enhance performance and handling. And with the Outback, you have two options.
The direct-injection SUBARU BOXER® engine delivers capable performance with 182 hp. For 2020, the legendary Outback XT returns with a 260-hp directinjection turbocharged SUBARU BOXER® engine with 277 lb-ft of torque.
Either way, you use only the fuel you need, as standard Auto Start Stop can shut off the engine when idling in traffic to save fuel.
All-new, higher-performing SUBARU BOXER® engines
The 2020 Subaru Outback is available with the choice of two all-new SUBARU BOXER® engines. The direct-injection 2.5-litre 4-cylinder, linked to a new Lineartronic® Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), is engineered to perfectly balance powerful response with outstanding fuel economy. The direct-injection turbocharged 2.4-litre 4-cylinder is connected to a new high-torque CVT to create class-leading levels of performance. Both engines incorporate the latest weight-saving measures and advanced technologies to boost efficiency, improve acceleration and heighten driver engagement.
Transmission + Symmetrical AWD
The all-new Outback is available with two new versions of the Lineartronic® CVT, one linked to the 2.5-litre 4-cylnder and the other paired with the turbocharged 2.4-litre 4-cylinder. These transmissions have been further refined for greater efficiency, reduced noise and heightened driveability. Each drivetrain is fully integrated with the Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD system to create unsurpassed levels of control and confidence under all possible conditions. These drivetrains give the Outback the superior performance of a full-time AWD utility with the fuel-efficiency of a front-wheel drive vehicle.
Two New Versions of X-MODE®
There are now two versions of the reengineered X-MODE® system, which allows you to tackle the steepest of inclines with even more confidence. The touchscreen functions on the standard version controls the operation of the VDC and X-MODE® together. The dual-function version, available exclusively on the Outdoor XT trim level, has touchscreen controls that lets you select between two different settings tailored to specific driving conditions—namely, snow/dirt and deep snow/mud.
Hill Descent Control
With the X-MODE® system activated, Hill Descent Control automatically maintains a constant speed when travelling down steep inclines. With the system activated, the driver is free from the demands of controlling the brakes and can focus exclusively on navigating the road ahead.
The Outback represents the very latest in Subaru safety, down to the strong core of its Subaru Global Platform.
For better visibility, there are standard LED headlights with available steering responsive functionality as well as a front-view camera. And peace of mind is possible just about anywhere, thanks to a host of active safety technologies.
Every Outback includes standard Subaru EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology. Equipped with a comprehensive suite of innovative safety features, EyeSight® looks ahead, alerts you to potential dangers and can even intervene to help you avoid a collision.
Reverse Automatic Braking
Available on the Touring trim level and up, this system detects obstacles behind the vehicle and automatically applies the brakes if a collision seems imminent. The system also incorporates a warning function that triggers different patterns of alarm according to the distance the car is away from an obstacle. To complete the picture, a visual representation of this distance is projected onto the centre console screen.
Subaru Rear/Side Vehicle Detection System (SRVD)
This available system incorporates three distinct functions: Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Blind Spot Detection identifies vehicles that may be travelling in your blind spot. Lane Change Assist signals when vehicles are approaching quickly from adjacent lanes. Lastly, the Rear Cross Traffic Alert function chimes in when vehicles are approaching from either side, such as when you’re reversing out of a parking space or driveway. The LED indicators for the SRVD system are located inside of the side mirrors’ housing for improved visibility.
VDC with Active Torque Vectoring
The Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC)† system utilizes multiple sensors to assess when the vehicle is approaching the limits of stability and then automatically adjusts the AWD torque distribution, engine output and brakes at each wheel to help the driver remain in control.
The system also features Active Torque Vectoring, which automatically applies brakes to the inside front wheel and distributes more torque to the outside front wheel during cornering. These systems, standard on all models, work together to create superior stability, cornering capability and active safety.
† VDC is also known as electronic stability control
EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology
This award-winning safety system is now standard on all versions of the all-new Subaru Outback. The system utilizes two cameras to monitor activity on the road ahead, help identify potentially dangerous situations and provide assistance to the driver when needed most.
EyeSight® incorporates several advanced active-safety systems: Pre-collision Braking, Pre-collision Brake Assist, Pre-collision Throttle Management, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centering Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Sway Warning, Lane Keep Assist and Lead Vehicle Start Alert.
High Beam Assist
This feature, now standard on all versions of the all-new Outback, allows the driver to keep the high beams on at all times. When the EyeSight® cameras detect an oncoming vehicle or the distance to the vehicle in front is reduced, High Beam Assist automatically dims the headlights. Then, when other vehicles are far enough away, the system switches the high beams on again.
This standard rearview camera, now fitted with a washer, is mounted close to the centre of the vehicle to capture a crystal-clear, distortion-free image of what’s behind the vehicle. This wide-angle image is then projected onto the centre console screen, along with dynamic guide lines that show the driver how to angle the vehicle perfectly.
